Touch the texture of paint.
Oil paints can be roughly divided into two components: pigments, which are the initial source of color, and drying oil, which acts as a glue to fix the pigments to the canvas. There are many different types of paints, such as transparent watercolor, acrylic, and mineral pigments (Japanese painting), but they all have one thing in common: they all use pigment colors. The medium used to fix the pigments, such as gum arabic or glue, differs from the original medium, giving the paints their unique luster and characteristics.
The works collected in this special feature are characterized by techniques that make maximum use of the matiere (texture) that can only be achieved with oil paints using dry oil as the medium. The slow-drying "hard" oil paints can be heaped up or spread on the canvas with a painting knife as if they were clay, and even look as if they were cooking with some kind of paste. Even acrylic paints, whose mediums have been broadened by modern technology, can achieve a hardness similar to that of oil paints. In fact, the act of mixing another medium with paint from the tube to create further effects is almost chemically the same as the cooking process of extracting flavor from various ingredients, mixing them together, and heating them.
Paintings created in this way, like "touch" and "food," end up "decorating" the walls of your room. I extracted the reading "shoku" (literally, "food") common to the three Chinese characters that appear in these three processes, and used it as the title of this special feature. It is also a pleasure to look at the paintings as if you were admiring an exquisite dish.
