Art - Das Kunstmagazin, a long-established German art magazine owned by Gruner + Jahr, has announced that it will offer about 40 of its magazines online for free on its website.

Das Kunstmagazin was founded in 1971 and mainly deals with the genre of contemporary art. In addition to its media activities, Das Kunstmagazin has a high level of commitment to the industry by organizing competitions to honor leading curators (one of the winners is Susanne Pfeffer, director of the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt am Main).

Tim Sommer, the magazine's editor-in-chief, commented, "Bringing art into the homes of our readers through great photography and clever, plain text has always been one of our strengths. This proposal is in line with our core values.

This initiative is one of the countermeasures against the continued inaccessibility of art, such as the closure of museums and galleries due to the current new coronavirus. The German art industry is also suffering from the secondary effects of the virus, as is Japan and other countries.

Germany recently made headlines by announcing about 50 billion euros in financial support for artists and freelancers. Not only that, but also Foreign Minister Grütters' words that "artists are not only a necessity (for a democratic society), they are essential for life support" were applauded.

Now, of course, Japan is taking steps to respond to the with corona, including the deployment of online viewing. A new tool for a new situation. This is important, but we should also think about how to utilize the resources we have, as Art - Das kunstmagazin did. In times like these, it might be interesting to look back at exhibitions or magazines from 20 years ago.
