Mano Okaaki|Painting for Speech. Abstract paintings that reveal a primitive narrative.

2020/08/26
Shinzo Okuoka

Born in Shiga Prefecture in 1976, Mano started his career in 2006 based in his birthplace. He studied at Kyoto University of Arts, and has exhibited in Japan and abroad, including "BERLINER LISTE" in Berlin and "ART EXPO NY" in New York, as well as in essays, photo books, and other media.

Mano, who mainly uses acrylic painting with an awareness of the flow of abstract expression of the 1940s, such as enformel, says, "As a technique, I don't do anything particularly difficult. I just apply paint straight onto the canvas. I want to convey the message that painting is something that anyone can do, just like a toddler doodling. Growing up in an artistic family, where his father was a Japanese-style painter and his mother was a musician, the fact that creation and self-expression was a simple, everyday activity did not make Mano have a special awareness of art.

His creative roots lie in a mystical experience he had at the age of 19, and he took primitive themes such as love, light, hope, and nature and turned them into paintings using an abstract expressionist approach in his output. Taking a page from the avant-garde school of artists such as Tadanori Yokoo and Seiji Horio, he appears to be sincere in his approach to the history of painting, but at the same time, he looks beyond his work to "connecting with others. In other words, in a sense, Mano's paintings can be said to be a message based on a larger perspective for human beings, such as nature and the earth. It is as if all the phenomena that occur on this planet.
