It is the first solo exhibition of young British artist Nicholas Hatfull. This is Hatfull's first solo exhibition in Asia. Hatfull was born in 1984 and studied at the Royal Academy School in 2011. THE CLUB is a contemporary gallery in Ginza, Tokyo. This exhibition will feature 14 of Hatfull's latest works. Hatfull currently lives and works in London. Hatfull currently lives and works in London, and is active globally with a focus on Europe. He has participated in a group show at the Saatchi Gallery in London and his work is in the collection of Beth Rudin DeWoody, a prestigious American collector. Hatfull draws inspiration from objects and scenes that he sees in his daily life, such as ice cream, highways, and clothes hanging from clotheslines. Interestingly, he treats these objects and landscapes in a unique way, using iPad sketches and spray paint to pour the images onto the canvas and make them translucent. The reason why he represents the images in this way is because they become fragments of memories and evoke nostalgia. "The wind rustling the grass, the wind rustling the laundry, the repeated vignettes in Yasujiro Ozu's transitional sequences... And interspersed in my memory are his color films in particular, and images of futon covers, shirts, and towels. Hatfull's dreamlike paintings stimulate our senses. Trying to find clues to reality in these paintings may provide us with a pleasant journey. We do not know how to classify reality and illusion. Which is real, and what else is illusion? Compared to a hatful of imagination, a movie scene can be classified as real. However, movie scenes are also imaginary and illusory because they are non-fiction and directed by humans. This exhibition will help us to develop our perspective and insight.
