    Description

A work in which a texture is created on an acrylic board using medeium and printed on top of it using UV inkjet. The transparent acrylic medallion in the margin receives light and creates shadows like the light reflected on the surface of water. The model of the work is Aoi Yamada. Technique :Acrylic Plate, Acrylic, UVink print, ed.1/1 (Other sizes available Hahnemühle fine art baryta, Archival Pigment Print, SIZE : 500×500mm ed.3) Making movie : https://youtu.be/qVtPtIj5VII It was not until I became deeply involved in the world of water that I came into contact with the existence of life and death. This was long before I started photography. I happened to be invited to go diving at that time, and the underwater world I saw for the first time stole my heart in an instant. Various phenomena that can only occur in water. Beautiful phenomena woven by living organisms, water, and light. They brought me a strong sense of elation and excitement. In that world, it is difficult to walk as on the ground, and depending on the weather conditions, it is not even possible to stand. It requires training and careful preparation. Above all, there is a limit to how much you can breathe. In this world full of such inconveniences, this work focuses on "breathing," the most important thing for living beings to survive. Breathing is an essential part of life, especially for living organisms. During life, "it" is performed endlessly and repeatedly, and its loss is considered death. We do not usually see it, and we are rarely aware of it. By being separated from "it," which is closely connected to life, we can face the value and existence of its essence. It is in water. Covered by water, the fear within a person surfaces. Besides, the situation of not being able to breathe exposes one's attachment to life. I photograph their struggle, their unpredictable appearance. I juxtapose the inability to move as I wish with the "living" of human beings. In "living," people encounter various difficulties. No matter how much we try to break down the barriers of inconvenience by human hands, there is a limit to it, and the essence of it will never change. This inconvenience is also "living. The essence of life is to go on the way one should live while resisting death, which is equally given to us. It is not something that can be driven by calculation or science. Life is not only about visible beauty, but also about the true strength that we are born with.

  • About this artist

    Concept

    Artist’s statement
“Control” is concept that lies at the heart of my work.
All of us have the desire, consciously or not, to control the environment surrounding us or the conditions affecting us.

We dominate and ignore the laws of nature. Thanks to risk analysis and cutting-edge technologies, we believe we can control everything. Where are human beings headed?
I came to scuba diving by chance. Since then, I have become infatuated by the charm of the world created by water, the beauty of light and the wide variety of aquatic beings.
Water is a substance which is essential to human beings and yet, it never yields to our will.

As a photographer, the foundation of my work lies in expressing the concept of “control” through the relationship between humans and water.

Before becoming a photographer, I worked as a chef in an Italian restaurant.
Every day, I chopped and cooked a lot of dead animals and plants. I then watched people eat them.
One life is founded on the sacrifice of many other lives.

This led me to think that anything, whether a great product, art or even religion, is, after all, just a human creation.
Regardless of how pure it is intended to be, inevitably, it gets contaminated.
This is because impurity is a part of humanity.
And yet, ironically, this is also what makes everything interesting.

My works are the results of calculated hazard.
During the creation process, it is essential to rely on calculated control. At the same time, but in opposition, uncontrollable chance is equally important.

I believe that only when these two factors are present I can create a work of art truly touch people’s heart.

There is a notion that the universe consists of two opposite forces, Yin and Yang. I think control as well as has two facets, which coexist and rule together.
Humans have tried to dominate nature.
At the same time, humans have the wisdom to live in harmony with nature.
Being endowed with this dual approach, how can we improve how we live with nature? How can we strike a better balance?
I hope my work will make you reflect on this question.
